Surely, there are many typing speed test apps found online. I have used some of them. Some are good and some are not better than average. I used my typing learning experience to develop this typing speed test app. This app is easy to use and quite straightforward.
Do not be frustrated if you find your speed is not very good or even average. Try to figure out why your typing speed is slow in this typing speed test. Are you using the wrong fingers? If so, you can use the other app named as “Finger Indicator.”
On homepage, you will find two Youtube.com videos. Those videos have some professional advice to enhance your typing skills. You can follow those suggestions. There are other apps on this site such as Fast Typing, Typing Practice, and Alphabet practice. You may give a try to find if those are useful for you.
Patience is important if you want to reach the Professional level. Those people who reach the Professional level have surely tremendous typing speed and/or skill.
I wish you success so that you can reach the Professional level soon.
Cheers!

Computer Keyboard Typing for Beginners
Imagine this. You are sitting in front of your computer, ready to type something important. Maybe it is a school assignment, a job application, a work email, or even a message to a friend. You place your fingers on the keyboard, but then your eyes start moving between the screen and the keys. You start typing slowly. You make mistakes. You backspace a lot. And in the back of your mind, you think: I wish I could type fast and confidently.
Most people feel this way in the beginning. The good news is that computer keyboard typing is not a talent you are born with. It is a skill you can learn. And once you learn it the right way, everything in your life that involves typing becomes easier, faster, and more enjoyable.
But here is the interesting part. Learning computer keyboard typing is not just about typing faster. It is about building muscle memory, confidence, and flow. It is about transforming the keyboard from something you look at into something that feels like an extension of your hands. And if you stay with me through this post, that is exactly what you will start to understand.
There is one simple technique that almost every fast typist uses, but most beginners do not know. I will tell you what it is soon, but first, let us talk about something important.
Why Should You Learn Computer Keyboard Typing?
We live in a world where typing is everywhere. It is part of our daily life, whether we realize it or not. If you are a student, you type assignments, notes, and research papers. If you work in an office, typing is part of your communication, documentation, and tasks. Even if you are just playing games or browsing the internet, typing shows up more than you think.
Research shows that people with faster typing skills finish tasks up to 40 percent faster. That means if you spend two hours a day typing, learning computer keyboard typing can save you almost one hour daily. That is more time to relax, study, make money, or do anything else you enjoy.
Plus, typing fast just feels good. Your hands move smoothly. Your thoughts flow directly onto the screen. You experience less hesitation and frustration. Once you learn it, you never forget it.
The Real Challenge of Computer Keyboard Typing
The real challenge is not learning where the keys are. The real challenge is to type without looking at the keyboard. Most beginners keep looking down, and this slows them down. The reason is simple. When your eyes move away from the screen, your brain loses flow. You think slower. You correct more mistakes. You type less confidently.
So the goal is to learn to type by feel instead of sight. And to do that, we need to train your hands correctly from the start.
The Home Row Keys: The Foundation of Computer Keyboard Typing
This is the technique I mentioned earlier. All fast typists use something called the home row finger placement. This is the secret to typing fast without looking.
The home row keys are:
A S D F for your left hand
J K L ; for your right hand
If you place your fingers on these keys, you will notice two small bumps on the F and J keys. These bumps are guides. They let your fingers find their position without using your eyes.
Your left hand naturally rests on A S D F.
Your right hand naturally rests on J K L ;.
From this starting point, each finger is responsible for certain keys around it. This is how muscle memory begins.
Once your fingers know these positions, typing becomes easier, faster, and smoother. So always start with your fingers on the home row keys when you practice computer keyboard typing.
Try typing the word dad.
Your fingers move from D to A and back to D.
At first, it feels slow. But after a few tries, your hands start to remember it.
How to Sit Correctly While Typing
Your posture matters more than you think. If your body is tense or uncomfortable, your typing slows down, and your fingers get tired faster.
Here is how to sit properly when practicing computer keyboard typing:
Sit up straight with your back supported.
Keep your feet flat on the floor.
Your elbows should rest comfortably at your sides.
Your wrists should float slightly above the keyboard, not laying flat.
Your eyes should look at the screen, not the keyboard.
Imagine holding a small bubble under your wrists. You do not want to crush it, so you keep your wrists lifted lightly.
This helps you move your fingers freely.
The Importance of Starting Slow
This part surprises a lot of beginners. The fastest way to learn computer keyboard typing is to start slow. If you go too fast too soon, you develop bad habits. Bad habits are hard to unlearn.
So instead of trying to be fast immediately, focus on typing accurately. Speed will follow naturally as your hands learn the correct movements.
Think of it like learning to play the piano. First, you learn the right notes slowly. Then you get faster with practice.
Using Typing Lessons and Practice Tests
Your next step is consistent practice. This is where typing websites and typing games make a big difference. They help you learn in small steps so you do not feel overwhelmed.
Since you have access to free typing games and typing tests on your website, you already have the tools you need. Start with simple lessons like home row practice. Move to words and sentences once your fingers feel more comfortable.
Even five to ten minutes a day can create big improvements over time. The key is regular practice.
Example Practice Routine for Beginners:
3 minutes home row practice
2 minutes left hand keys
2 minutes right hand keys
3 minutes typing simple words
Optional: 5 minutes of typing game for fun
Total time: 10 to 15 minutes a day.
How to Stop Looking at the Keyboard
This is one of the biggest challenges for beginners. The first few days feel awkward. Your hands will want to look down. But you have to train your brain to trust your fingers.
Here are some easy tricks:
Cover your hands with a thin cloth or paper.
Use a keyboard cover that hides the letters.
Turn off the lights so only the screen is visible.
Place a sticky note on the top of your keyboard to block your view.
Your brain will learn faster than you think.
Try typing the word the ten times without looking. At first, it feels strange. But by the fifth time, your fingers start to find the keys naturally.
How to Avoid Common Typing Mistakes
Beginners often make the same mistakes. Here is how to fix them:
Mistake 1: Typing with only two or three fingers
Solution: Use all fingers consistently and start from the home row.
Mistake 2: Rushing before accuracy
Solution: Slow down. Focus on correct key presses.
Mistake 3: Looking down too much
Solution: Keep your eyes on the screen and trust your finger memory.
Mistake 4: Not practicing regularly
Solution: Practice daily, even if it is just for a few minutes.
Using Typing Games to Build Speed
Typing games are one of the best tools for improving computer keyboard typing. They make learning fun, and they push your brain to think faster. Games build quick reaction time, finger coordination, and focus.
If you play a car racing typing game, the faster you type, the faster your car moves. This turns typing practice into a fun challenge instead of a boring exercise.
You start forgetting that you are practicing at all.
Tracking Your Progress
One of the most motivating parts of computer keyboard typing is watching your speed increase over time. Your typing speed is measured in Words Per Minute, also known as WPM. Your accuracy shows how many mistakes you make.
In the beginning, it is normal to be slow. Many beginners start around 10 to 25 WPM. With practice, you can reach 40 to 60 WPM. With more practice, you can even reach 80 or 100 WPM.
The goal is not to be perfect. The goal is to be better than yesterday.
How Long Will It Take to Learn?
Everyone learns at a different speed. But here is what most people experience:
In 1 week of daily practice: You feel more comfortable with the keyboard.
In 2 to 3 weeks: You start typing without looking as much.
In 1 to 2 months: Your speed and accuracy improve noticeably.
In 3 to 6 months: Typing becomes natural and automatic.
So be patient. Every bit of practice adds up.
Understanding Finger Responsibility
When learning computer keyboard typing, one helpful thing to remember is that each finger has a job. Instead of letting any finger press any key, each one should handle a specific group of keys. This keeps your typing smooth and helps your brain form strong muscle memory. For example, your left index finger should cover R, T, F, G, V and B, while your right index finger should cover U, Y, H, J, N and M. At first, this might feel confusing, but the more you practice, the more natural your fingers will move. Imagine each finger having a tiny home and it only steps out to visit nearby neighbors. The more consistent you are, the faster your fingers will learn their roles.
Practicing Common Words and Patterns
Once you understand finger placement, the next step is practicing common words. Many words in English share similar patterns and repeated letter combinations. Practicing these helps your hands move smoothly without stopping to think. Words like the, and, of, to, in, for, and you appear frequently in everyday typing. When you type them repeatedly, your fingers start to remember the patterns automatically. You do not have to memorize anything. Your hands learn simply by repeating movements. Try typing small groups of words together such as the and to in short practice sessions. You may be surprised how quickly your speed increases when your fingers memorize these common combinations.
Building Muscle Memory Through Repetition
Muscle memory is the secret behind typing without looking. It is the same way you remember how to ride a bike or tie your shoes. In computer keyboard typing, your fingers learn the movements through repeated action. The more you type, the less you think. Your goal is to let your fingers move on their own. This requires steady, relaxed practice. It does not require pushing hard or rushing. Think of it as training your hands to dance across the keys in a smooth rhythm. Even five minutes of focused practice is better than thirty minutes of distracted typing. Quality over quantity makes the biggest difference in muscle memory formation.
Using Short Sentences to Improve Flow
Typing sentences is different from typing isolated words because sentences make your hands move in flowing patterns. When practicing computer keyboard typing, begin typing simple, short sentences to build a rhythm. A sentence like I can type better every day seems simple, but it encourages your fingers to move smoothly. Once this feels comfortable, try slightly longer sentences. Keep your eyes on the screen, not the keyboard. If you make mistakes, do not stop and worry. Just keep typing and correct mistakes at the end. The goal is to maintain flow. Flow leads to fluency, and fluency leads to speed.
Finding Your Ideal Practice Pace
Everyone learns computer keyboard typing at a different speed. Some people improve quickly, while others take more time. The important thing is not how fast you learn but how consistently you practice. If you start feeling frustrated, slow down and relax your shoulders and hands. Tension slows your fingers. Instead of forcing speed, allow speed to appear naturally as you practice with accuracy. Think of typing as learning a skill gently, not racing against time. The more relaxed you are, the easier it becomes for your fingers to move confidently.
Connecting Typing Skills to Real-Life Tasks
It is helpful to use your new typing skills in everyday activities. Type messages, write notes, journal, or practice small tasks on your computer. The more you use computer keyboard typing in your daily life, the faster your skill develops. Instead of limiting typing to practice sessions, try typing real sentences or assignments using the techniques you learn. For example, write a small paragraph about your day and try to maintain good finger placement and accuracy. When typing becomes part of your daily routine, improvement happens naturally and almost without effort.
Developing Confidence While Typing
Confidence plays a big role in learning computer keyboard typing. Many beginners hesitate because they are afraid of making mistakes. However, mistakes are a natural part of learning. It is better to type and make errors than to stop and overthink every key. The more relaxed and confident you feel, the smoother your hands will move across the keyboard. Try to trust your fingers. Let them learn at their own pace. Over time, your typing will become automatic and natural without forcing it.
Training Your Hands to Move Without Pausing
One challenge beginners face is pausing in between letters or words. These pauses slow typing speed. To fix this, practice typing slowly but continuously without stopping after each word. Imagine your typing like water flowing from a tap. It should move softly and smoothly. Even if your speed is low at first, do not break the flow. Once your hands get used to steady movement, speed increases naturally. Flow first, speed second.
Typing Without Hitting Backspace Too Often
Pressing the backspace key too frequently interrupts typing rhythm. Instead of trying to fix every mistake immediately, keep typing forward and correct errors later. This trains your mind to focus on progress rather than perfection. You will find that your accuracy improves as you become familiar with key positions. When you stop correcting every small error in the moment, your brain stays focused and your typing becomes smoother.
Creating a Comfortable Practice Environment
Your environment affects your typing performance. A quiet and comfortable space helps you stay focused. Make sure your chair supports your back, your screen is at eye level, and your keyboard is placed in a position that allows your hands to move freely. A clean and organized workspace can also reduce distraction. When you are comfortable, your learning becomes easier and more enjoyable.
Using Real Passages to Improve Skill
After practicing letters and words, try typing real paragraphs from books, articles, or even your own thoughts. This helps you apply your computer keyboard typing skills in real-life situations. Pick something simple and enjoyable to read and try typing it without looking at the keyboard. If you do this regularly, your fingers will become familiar with the structure of sentences, punctuation, and natural typing flow.
Tracking Speed and Accuracy Progress
To stay motivated, it helps to record your typing progress. Try taking a typing test every few days to monitor your Words Per Minute and accuracy. You may notice small improvements at first, but these small improvements add up. Seeing your progress encourages you to continue practicing. If your accuracy drops on certain days, do not feel discouraged. Skill growth is not always a straight line. What matters is consistency and patience.
Reducing Hand Tension for Better Control
Typing with stiff or tense hands can slow you down and make typing uncomfortable. Keep your hands relaxed and your shoulders loose. If you start to feel tension, take a short break. Shake your hands gently and stretch your fingers. A relaxed posture helps your fingers move faster and prevents discomfort. Good technique is not just about where your fingers go. It is also about how relaxed and natural your movement feels.
Understanding That Improvement Takes Time
Computer keyboard typing is a long-term skill, not something that happens overnight. Some days your typing might feel great, and other days it might feel slow or awkward. This is normal. What matters is showing up and practicing regularly. Each time you practice, your brain strengthens the neural pathways that help your fingers remember where the keys are. Improvement happens gradually, and one day, you will notice you are typing without thinking at all.
Applying Typing Skills to Everyday Communication
As you improve, start using computer keyboard typing in your regular communication, such as sending emails, chatting online, or writing lists. Doing this reinforces your practice in natural situations. The more typing becomes part of daily life, the more automatic your skill becomes. When you use typing in real tasks, you train your brain to connect typing with real communication, not just practice drills.
Encouragement to Keep Going
Learning computer keyboard typing can sometimes feel slow or challenging, but every step you take brings you closer to fluency. Every time your fingers return to the home row, every time you type without looking, every time your accuracy improves even a little, you are building a valuable skill. Continue practicing with patience and interest. You are training your mind and your hands to work together, and that progress is meaningful.
Final Thoughts About Computer Keyboard Typing
Learning computer keyboard typing is one of the most useful skills you can gain. It saves time, increases confidence, and makes daily computer tasks easier and faster. The most important part is to practice regularly, stay patient, and trust the learning process.
Your hands will learn. Your brain will adapt. And one day, without realizing it, you will type smoothly and confidently without thinking.
If you are ready to begin, start small. Place your fingers on the home row. Do a short typing lesson. Play a typing game. And repeat tomorrow.
You are not just learning typing. You are building a skill that will support you for the rest of your life.
